What to Do When You’ve Had Too Much Coffee

It’s one of the most popular drinks around the world, and people everywhere just can’t get enough of it: Coffee. Maybe you can’t start your day without it, or you need an afternoon pick-me-up, or perhaps it’s your after-dinner treat with dessert. Whenever you drink it, at one point or another you may notice that you’ve had just a bit too much, and when that perkiness turns into jitters, here’s what to do:

Wait it out. It may seem a bit helpless, but the best thing you can do when you’ve consumed too much coffee is to try to stay calm and wait it out. Caffeine has a half life of about six hours, so that strong cup of coffee you made yourself as 6 am will still have some effect at noon, and won’t completely leave your system until 6pm. With this in mind, you can ease the panic knowing that the caffeine is still in your system and its long lasting effects are perfectly normal.

East something. Although it can’t do much to tame the effects the caffeine is already having on your system, eating something can certainly help the symptoms from getting any worse. Caffeine is fully absorbed once it reaches the small intestine by way of the stomach, but if your stomach is empty it won’t have a very long trip ahead. If you’re feeling jittery after having that first cup on an empty stomach, make sure to have breakfast or an early lunch immediately thereafter.

Everyone Wants to Live In a Van, But Who’s Building Them?

It’s almost impossible to peruse Instagram these days without coming across some perfectly pictured people gazing out the window of their converted vans, with the sun shining over a lake or mountainscape in the distance. Yes, with the rise of #vanlife, alternative lifestyles, and minimalist movements, living in a van down by the river went from being a bad joke in the 90s to being a life goal today. And why shouldn’t it be? Living a mobile lifestyle, one that isn’t tethered to a place or to things can offer endless possibilities when it comes to adventure and discovery. There’s just one question, who’s building all those vans and mobile homes?

According to Business Insider, it’s not Millennials. It may be surprising to learn, but despite the fact that most of the people pictured living a mobile lifestyle are young, with the exception of DIYers, it’s not young people building those homes. Business Insider recently reported on jobs that baby boomers held in the 1990s but millennials want no part of today, and top of their list was mobile home builders. In fact, whereas in 1990 people aged 21-36 comprised 57% of the workforce in the mobile home manufacturing industry, in 2017 that number dropped down to less than a third, a mere 31%. A surprising statistic, perhaps, but with the general decline in manufacturing jobs and the rise of tech work, the decrease may continue, either as a result of disinterest in the work or simply an unavailability of work to begin with as manufacturing declines and is outsourced overseas.

Prodigy frontman Keith Flint dead at 49

The world is in mourning today as news breaks of the passing of Keith Flint, frontman for The Prodigy, who took his own life over the weekend at the age of 49. The influential vocalist was found dead Monday at his home near London.

Prodigy co-founder Liam Howlett was one of the first to break the news to the public via Instagram. Howlett had the following to say of his friend and bandmate’s suicide:

“The news is true , I can’t believe I’m saying this but our brother Keith took his own life over the weekend, I’m shell shocked , f***in angry , confused and heart broken ..... r.i.p brother Liam”

In an early morning tweet the band announced the following:

“It is with deepest shock and sadness that we can confirm the death of our brother and best friend Keith Flint. A true pioneer, innovator and legend. He will be forever missed. We thank you for respecting the privacy of all concerned at this time.”

The Prodigy formed in the early 1990s when Flint, born in East London in 1969, met Howlett at a nightclub in Braintree, Essex, where he had moved to as a child. Known as much for its overt anti-establishment stance as for its music, the band developed a strong following and were considered pioneers of electronic music.

Tools and tutorials galore! The fact that you can find just about anything and order it online certainly applies to tools and craft materials as well! Specialized tools once reserved for those in the trades are now readily available to anyone willing to dish out the money, and with a plethora of tutorials uploaded to streaming sites on the daily there’s some great instruction available on just how to use those tools.

An enterprising endeavour. The new digital marketplace means it’s not just easy to buy anything, it’s easy to sell anything. With Etsy popularising handmade items online and craft fairs enjoying a resurgence in part because of it, many people have turned to DIY as a commercial enterprise.

You can’t beat custom. Yes, you can certainly buy anything these days, but sometimes you want something very specific. Maybe that ugly Christmas sweater just isn’t ugly enough, so you knit your own. Maybe that piece of jewelry just doesn’t express your individuality, so you make your own, etc. There’s a certain appeal that comes with custom, which is only fueling the DIY fire.

Unusual Oscar Stories

With the recent controversy surrounding the upcoming Academy Awards we thought we’d share some unusual stories of the Oscars. Specifically, the award trophies themselves. Here are four unusual stories about the ways Oscar recipients have treated their prizes.

An unusual doorstop. Although his views would later change, early on in his career Charlie Chaplin didn’t think very fondly of the Academy Awards. In fact, his first Oscar received in 1929 had a special use in his home, as a doorstop.

Cracking open a cold one. Timothy Hutton and his sister once decided to throw a party, and to entertain their guests they decided to throw Timothy’s 1981 Best Supporting Actor Oscar into the fridge to greet guests as they went to grab a beer. It has lived in the fridge ever since.

Bigger eggs. Russell Crowe won the Oscar for Best Actor in 2000 for his role in Gladiator. Of all places to display it, Crowe chose to prominently place his Oscar in the chicken coop on his ranch in Australia. He claims the award helps the chickens lay bigger eggs.

Dressed in drag. John Lassiter received not one but two Academy Awards for his work with Pixar, the first for Tin Toy in 1989 and the second for Toy Story in 1996. Along the way he made a discovery: Barbie clothes fit the trophy almost perfectly.
